I’ve grown out of platformers as I’ve aged, but this looks to bring me back! I think I’ll actually buy the game now because it seems absolutely wonderful. This is the first PS exclusive I’ve been excited to play for a couple of years as I absolutely loved the PSVR game and the free PS5 game. You will have plenty of opportunities to break up Bot Walls as you’re upgrading the Crash Site, but if you’re at the end of the game, go to the entrance of the Ice Temple.
Each level across five main galaxies and one unlockable one features a swarm of bots (many based on beloved PS characters) to rescue, as well as jigsaw pieces and some secret black holes too. Here, you’ll find your one-stop shop for every single collectible in the game, and the Trophies too, arranged into each zone Astro blasts off into. Astro Bot is technically the fifth entry in the Astro universe, though it’s the series’ first fully fledged — and fully priced — installment. Astro Bot takes ideas from these earlier titles and compiles them into a focused 3D platformer with dozens of main worlds, a bevy of additional unlockable planets and a wide range of satisfying mechanics. On top of this, the robot protagonists are super cute in every situation.
A New Intergalactic Adventure
The game’s visuals aren’t necessarily pushing the PlayStation 5 but they’re flawless and silky smooth, with not a bug in sight. An American living in Germany, John has been gaming and collecting games since the late ’80s. John’s keen eye for and obsession with high frame-rates have earned him the nickname “The Human FRAPS” in some circles.
That, in a nutshell, is what the first minutes of the game look like. There’s nothing beyond familiar forms and frameworks, yet it still manages to bring a smile to our faces. There’s not much to say about Astro Bot’s plot; it serves as a simple introduction, giving the player a reason to rescue bots in need and search for console-ship components to continue the journey through the vast cosmos. What truly sets Astro Bot apart from the competition, however, is the gameplay.
While the studio could just do that again, it would risk coming off as repetitive. But if the studio creates something too different from what came before, then it may not be met with the same acclaim. “No chance,” Doucet said when asked if Astro Bot could come to PSVR2. “It’s designed for a different medium. It would be a different game.” Though the explanation makes sense, this likely won’t be welcome news to purchasers of Sony’s headset who are already frustrated over a lack of big games. Alongside the new content, Team Asobi has also released a PlayStation 5 Pro patch for Astro Bot, “featuring a constant best resolution while still running at 60 frames per second.” So that’s nice. The irony that Astro Bot is launching on the same day that Concord is being shut down will not be lost on anyone, even though that is essentially a coincidence.
There are games that remind us why we fell in love with video games in the first place. It’s a phenomenally polished title, featuring great audiovisuals and, above all, brilliant gameplay that never gets boring. It’s also a family-friendly game, perfect for everyone to enjoy together. It’s also worth noting that, before you rescue them, none of the characters do anything that is in anyway related to them or their games. They’re usually just tied up or waving for help or, in the case of Solid Snake, just hanging impotently from a tree. The characters make for fun rewards for completing a level, or finding a secret, but as a tribute to the games they originate from they’re almost entirely useless.
This isn’t for any malicious reason, of course, but simply because building a “flat screen” game is very different to building one for virtual reality. I think many would agree that the haptics featured in Astro’s Playroom are still among the best on the system – after all, it was made to show off the controller in the first place.
New Free & Subscription Games For All Platforms
Thought it was the best platforming experience since Bowsers Fury. But im very frustrated by how cruel the last extra level can be. I hate the level design, totally unbalenced when compared to the rest of the game. Team Asobi has announced that five new levels are coming to Astro Bot as weekly drops, starting on Feb. 13. (That’s today!) As with previous additions to the Game of the Year winner, the new levels are free to download — and, of course, each comes with a new Special Bot to rescue. It’s hard to say what cute, robotic PlayStation characters could possibly top the twin Spider-Man bots from the Christmas level, but I’m excited to find out.
I’ve never cared about PlayStation Trophies before, but I expect to unlock them all in Astro Bot, if only incidentally because I want to see and do everything this game offers. I don’t know if I’ve ever played a platformer before where I enjoyed literally every single boss fight and level, but I can confidently say that about Astro Bot. The stages constantly surprise and delight as they take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware. Astro Bot levels are beautiful, brought to life by genius art direction and some of the best graphics on the PS5. G28 feels so alive thanks to how the DualSense controller reacts to what players see on the screen, with Astro Bot making great use of the DualSense’s haptic feedback and speaker.
